WINNIPEG — The Canadians Care Coalition in association with Amnesty International, Menno Simons Students Association and the Global College Students Association presents Rally for Refuge: Rescind the safe third country agreement.
We are calling on the Right Honourable Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the Honourable Minister Hussen and the Canadian Government to rescind the designation of ‘Safe Third Country’ from the United States. The Safe Third Country Agreement denies refugee claimants access to the Canadian refugee determination system if they have come from the United States to the Canadian border. The assumption within this agreement is that the US upholds international human rights standings and the Refugee Convention. The US is currently doing neither in its administrative decisions.
Due to the recent policy and legal changes from Attorney General Jeff Session and Executive Orders issued by US President Donald Trump the US can no longer be understood to constitute a ‘safe’ country for asylum seekers and refugees. These changes are in violation of binding international refugee and human rights legal provisions.
The US administrations Zero Tolerance policy came into effect in April 2018. This policy aims to separate and detains families seeking asylum in the United States. These policies and practices place increased risk on asylum seekers to be deported to countries where they may face persecution. This administration is placing the most venerable of our population in detention centers, forcing them to defend themselves in court and spreading them across America without contact with their parents.
Even with the June 20th Executive Order there is no plan to reunify over 2,000 children who were forcibly separated from their parents. It also does not address the continued persecution of families seeking safety.
We are asking participants in this rally to bring a valued toy to represent a child that they can place on the steps of the Legislature during the rally and bring back home with them at the end. In addition, limited amounts of signs will be available but we encourage all to create and bring their own. Paper dolls will be distributed for participants to sign which will then be delivered to Minister Carr. If you are interested in volunteering in this event please contact [email protected]
This action will be held on the traditional land of the Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dene, and Dakota peoples, and the homeland of the Métis Nation.
A final speaker list as well as other opportunities for engagement will be posted upon confirmation from all speakers.
