Voices of Indigenous Youth: A Healthy Neighbourhood & Urban Garden Project
By the centre for Aboriginal and Rural Education Studies, Faculty of education, Brandon University

Runs July 20 till August 11, 2018

Opening Reception: Friday July 20, 2018, 6pm to 9pm
“Planting Seeds of Change: Voices of Indigenous Youth is a collection of photographs and stories about how urban community gardens contribute to holistic health of individuals and by extension, healthy neighbourhoods. The Medicine Wheel is used as a framework for understanding the holistic health benefits of urban gardening. As part of the Urban Gardens/Holistic Health Project, Indigenous youth in Brandon and Winnipeg, Manitoba, ages 18-29 years, designed, installed, and harvested demonstration gardens. They used the photographs that they took throughout the project to reflect on their gardening experiences. Through their photographs and storytelling, the Indigenous youth participating in this photovoice project share their personal insights on the social benefits and contributions of urban gardening to the physical, emotional and spiritual health of indigenous youth residing in urban neighbourhoods. The exhibit expands knowledge of Indigenous perspectives about health and wellness and contributes to the public discourse about healthy urban neighbourhoods.”
